5 injured as fishermen clash with river police in Munshiganj
During an operation of river police -- to protect mother hilsa in the Meghna river, under Munshiganj's Sadar upazila -- fishermen and villagers attacked the law enforcers early today.
Four river police personnel were injured, including the In-charge of Gazaria River Police Station, and one fisherman was shot during the incident.
The injured are: Sub-inspector (SI) Abdus Salam, SI Mohammad Shah Alam, Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Md Faisal Kabir and Constable Kabir Hossain.
The attack took place at 8:30am today in Char Jhapta village of the upazila, on the bank of Meghna river, reports our local correspondent.
SI Abdus Salam said, on a speedboat and a trawler, 10 river police personnel engaged in the operation. On the riverbank, 200-250 fishermen and villagers rushed towards them, armed with locally made weapons, and launched a surprise attack.
In self-defense, the law enforcers fired about 40 rounds from three shotguns, he said.
Md Shohag, an emergency department doctor at Munshiganj General Hospital, said, "Sticks were used to hit the river police personnel. After primary treatment, Constable Kabir Hossain was sent to National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka and the rest were sent to Dhaka's Central Police Hospital for better treatment."
"Harej Ali (60) of Char Jhapta village was also transferred to Dhaka after he arrived at the hospital with a bullet wound," he added.
