Accident in Dhaka: Visually impaired dies, man with low vision narrowly escapes
They both have disabilities -- one was visually impaired while another had low vision. They lived together in Gazipur's Tongi area to help each other.
Visually impaired Faisal had to travel to Dhaka from Tongi on many occasions, aided by Hari Charan who has low vision.
Yesterday, both of them arrived in Dhaka but could not return together.
A recklessly driven covered-van hit them in Dhaka's Badda area around 12:15am when they were crossing the road together, said Shahidul Islam, a sub-inspector of Badda Police Station.
Faisal (28) was critically injured and later declared death around 3:00 am at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Hari Charan (46), who was also injured, survived.
Both the victims were members of a local NGO in Tongi called "Protibondhi Kalyan Sangstha," and used to live with other persons with disabilities, the manager of the organisation confirmed.
Police, the victim's relatives, and colleagues reckon Hari Charan survived since he could see the covered van approaching.
The deceased's cousin Mozammel Hossain Rubel said, "Faisal told them that he worked at a packaging factory, but we came to know that he used to beg alms in Dhaka city to feed her wife and children back in Noakhali."
Police seized the covered van, but the driver fled away.
