Fire at bulkhead under control in Meghna river
A fire that broke out on a Dhaka-bound paper carton-laden bulkhead in the Meghna River in Chandpur early today is now under control.
The incident took place near Chandpur launch ghat at 9:30am. However, no casualties were reported, reports our Chandpur correspondent quoting officials.
Coast Guard Chandpur Station Commander Sub Lt Ruhan Manzur said the bulkhead MV Faruq was going towards Dhaka from Barishal. At that time, after approaching the green bay of the Meghna River, the cartons in the bulkhead caught fire.
Upon hearing the news, the coast guard and fire service rushed to the scene and extinguished it.
All six sailors were rescued unharmed from the bulkhead, he said.
The fire was brought under control within an hour, according to Rabiul Alam, senior station officer of the Chandpur Fire Service. The cause of the fire, however, is still unknown.
He said that the matter would be investigated.
