Amartya Sen “unable” to receive “Bangabibhusan” conferred by Mamata Banerjee govt
Nobel laureate Bangalee economist Amartya Sen has expressed his inability to receive the "Bangabibhusan", the highest civilian award conferred by the West Bengal government, according to his daughter Antara Dev Sen.
Sen, a staunch critic of the BJP, is understood to have told the state government officials in the first week of July when approached that he will not be in India when the presentation ceremony takes place. It is scheduled to be held in Kolkata today (July 25, 2022).
"He has had the good fortune of being honoured with several awards and wants the 'Bangabibhusan' to be conferred on others now," the economist's daughter told a local news channel.
"He is at present in Europe," she added, our New Delhi correspondent reports.
Asked if Sen's decision had anything to do with the appeal by CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty to the prospective recipients, including Sen, to not receive the award from the Mamata Banerjee government, whose key minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested for alleged involvement in a school jobs scam, Antara said the economist had informed the organisers before any such developments took place that he will be unavailable.
