9 dead in West Bengal train accident
Nine people were killed in an express train accident at Jalpaiguri in India's West Bengal yesterday, said a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) spokesperson today.
Twelve coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train derailed and overturned yesterday with 1,053 passengers on board at the time of the incident, NFR said in a statement, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
NFR's Chief Public relations Officer Guneet Kaur said the number of injured currently stands at 36. While 23 passengers are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jalpaiguri, six are admitted to North Bengal Medical College and seven at Maynaguri Rural Hospital.
The rescue operation has been completed, said the NFR statement.
"Since some of the injured are in critical condition, the death toll may go up. We are now using cranes for removing the damaged compartments," said Jalpaiguri District Magistrate Maumita Godara Basu.
