Tagore song and dance by Surtirtha
Cultural organisation Surtirtha organised a two-day musical programme to celebrate the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. The programme was held at the auditorium of National Music and Dance Centre, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and concluded yesterday. The programme featured a rendition of Tagore songs by the members of the organisation and distinguished artistes from different parts of the country. Along with music, there were several dance performances.
The highlight of the first day (June 6) were two solo performances by the respective guest artistes. The programme began with a choral rendition of "Hey natun dekha dik arbar jonmer" by the members of Surtirtha. Noted danseuse Tamanna Rahman performed a solo dance next.
Among the guest artistes, Tonni Dutta from Chittagong began the solo performances with renditions of "Shotti rup tarey" and "Akashey dui hatey." Sushanta Roy, a teacher of literature from Comilla, sang "Keno bani taba" and "Ogo purabashi ami darey tabo daraye achhi."
Noted Tagore singer and director of Surtirtha, Mita Haque said that the artistes from outside Dhaka are doing well in their respective environments but are in need of greater patronage to develop their skills.
Mahua Manjuri Sunanda (Joypurhat) was the next to go on stage. She effortlessly rendered "Ganer jharnatalay" and "Ami phirbonarey." A skilled artiste of both Rabindra and Nazrul Sangeet, Sunanda is learning Nazrul at Chhayanaut.
Supriya Das (Sylhet) rendered "Hridoy nandan bon-e" and "Tomar-ee jharnatalay nirjaney."
Among others, Shatyam Kumar Debnath (Dhaka), Shimonti Sharmin Sithi (Rangpur) and Shukla Paul (Sirajganj) performed at the programme.
The second day's programme was highlighted by a musical performance and an award giving ceremony. Among those honoured by Surtirtha were noted tabla artiste Madan Gopal Das. The latter half of the evening was taken over by members of the organisation who rendered Tagore's patriotic songs.
