Buet team wins int'l architectural design competition
A team of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) has brought great honour to the country by winning the first prize of an international architectural design competition titled 'Design for the Children', held in USA.
Sheikh Ahsan Ulllah Mojumder, assistant professor of Buet, led his team that won the race of world class architects and designers from different parts of the globe to develop an adaptable, sustainable and culturally responsive pediatric clinic which can be modified to fit different sites in East Africa.
Prof Ahsan's teammates are: Dilruba Ferdous Shuvra, Asifur Rahman and Dr Sharmina Sultana.
This was disclosed in a press conference at the Buet's architecture department jointly organised by Buet and Bangladesh Brand Forum (BBF).
Lara Calder, architect from Sydney, won the second prize while Perkins and Will from Seatle of United States placed third.
Addressing the press conference and presenting his design, Prof Ahsan said the main thing that drove us to create the design was the poverty prone area of East Africa where one children dies in every 15 seconds.
"We were given the task to develop the design that would be adaptable, sustainable and culturally responsive to the East African area for which we had to know the culture of the area first," he said.
The design of Ahsan and his team is comprised of two phases. Phase one was to build a satellite pediatric clinic addressing the prevalent problems regarding childbirth and mortality while the second phase was to convert the existing clinic into a large hospital.
Congratulating Ahsan and his team on their outstanding achievement, head of the Architecture department of Buet Prof Shaheda Rahman said the country has a lot of meritorious students, we just need to nurture them.
"Amidst limited resources and capacity, the country's youths are still bringing great honour to the country by their outstanding performances in the global arena like Ahsan and his team," she said.
The press conference was also addressed by BBF chief adviser and Professor of IBA Syed Farhat Anwar and Editor Creative of BBF Nazia Andaleeb Preema.
