2 killed in 'shootouts'
A close aide to top criminal Emon was killed yesterday in a shootout between his cohorts and Rab-2 in the capital's Mohammadpur.
The dead was identified as Jahidul Islam Manik alias Boro Manik, 35.
Meanwhile, a notorious criminal was killed in shootout between his accomplices and police in Jhenidah.
Rab-2 said acting on a tip-off, a Rab team took position at the Dhaka Udyan at Mohammadpur to arrest the criminals at around 1:00am.
Sensing the presence of the Rab members, the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers prompting them to retaliate, Rab officials said.
Manik was killed on the spot while his cohorts managed to escape. The law enforcers recovered a revolver and two bullets from the scene.
Rab and police said Manik was accused in several cases on different charges including murder.
Our Jhenidah correspondent adds: police arrested Sachchu Molla, 40, a notorious criminal and the second-in-command of Amal Bahini, and Sachchu's associate Bipul at Harihara Noapara bridge at Charuibil at about 8:30pm on Saturday.
Acting on their confession, police took them to Khulum Bari Char on the bank of Garai river to recover illegal arms.
When police reached the place, Sachchu's accomplices opened fire on the law enforcers prompting them to retaliate. Sachchu was killed in the shootout while his cohorts except Bipul managed to flee.
Two policemen were also injured in the incident. Police recovered a pipe gun and four rounds of bullet from the spot.
Sachchu was wanted in eight cases including two for murder, said Additional Superintendent of Police TM Mozahidul Islam.
