Sheershanews editor sent to jail

A Dhaka court yesterday sent Ekramul Haq, editor of recently shut online news agency Sheershanews.com, to jail after rejecting a five-day remand prayer sought by Detective Branch (DB) of Police in connection to an extortion case.
The court also rejected Ekramul's bail prayer, submitted by his lawyer, which said Ekramul is suffering from different diseases.
Metropolitan Magistrate Keshob Roy Chowdhury passed the order after DB Sub-Inspector Solaiman Hossain, produced Ekramul before it with the remand prayer.
The editor, re-arrested on November 1, was earlier remanded for several days in connection to the case.
Habibur Rahman, tax inspector of Tax Inspection Department, filed the case with Ramna Police Station on November 1, alleging that Ekramul extorted Tk 5,000 from him on June 12.
