TV channels urged to use sign language in news
Speakers at a view exchange meeting yesterday called on the government and private television channels to introduce the use of sign language in prime time news programmes for the hearing-impaired people.
The National Forum of Organisations Working with the Disabled (NFOWD) organised the meeting at the National Press Club in the city.
BTV has already started using sign language in its 5pm news, but it is not enough, said NFOWD President Khandakar Zahurul Alam.
Only one private TV channel is using sign language in their news programme, but the other private TV channels are not showing much interest in it, he added.
Representatives of different organisations urged the authorities concerned to take steps to ensure the use of sign language on television in order to establish the right to know for the hearing-impaired people.
NFOWD Secretary General Zawaherul Islam Mamun and Director Dr Nafisur Rahman also spoke.
