Workshop on IP held at East West University
The Department of Law of East West University hosted a workshop titled ‘Intellectual Property (IP) in Bangladesh: prospects and challenges’ on December 2 2019 with a view to engaging the law students on the prospects and challenges of IP protection in Bangladesh. A total of ninety undergraduate and graduate students attended the day-long workshop. The sessions of the workshop were conducted by resource persons ranging from academics, officials from Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT), Ministry of Industries, Bangladesh and IP lawyers.
The first speaker of the workshop was Mahua Zahur, former Senior Lecturer and Chairperson of the Department of Law of East West University. She discussed on ‘introduction to IP in Bangladesh.’ The second speaker was Taslima Jahan, Senior Lecturer, School of Business and Economics of United International University; she shed light on the theme ‘IP and lifesaving products’. The first session was closed by Md. Belal Hossen, Examiner, Trademark and GI in DPDT, Bangladesh.
The second session of the workshop resumed, after a short break, with the speech of a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, A S M Sayem Ali Pathan. He lectured on ‘importance of IP in Bangladesh’. Barrister ABM Hamidul Misbah, lawyer of the Supreme Court delivered his lecture on ‘IP Litigation in Bangladesh’. It was followed by a brief session on ‘IP in digital age’ which was taken by Mohammad Ataul Karim, Senior Lecturer of Law at East West University. The workshop accommodated a slot for a thoughtful and engaging question-answer session, conducted by Md. Sanowar Hossain, Registrar, (Additional Secretary), DPDT, Bangladesh.
The closing session of the workshop was graced by Professor Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah, Dean, Faculty of Law, Dhaka of University, as chief guest, Md. Sanowar Hossain, Registrar, (Additional Secretary), DPDT, Ministry of Industries, Bangladesh, as guest of honor and Professor Dr. Shima Zaman, Professor of Law, University of Dhaka and Advisor, Department of Law, East West University, as special guest. The program ended with distribution of certificates to all the participants of the workshop.
