JSD leader shot dead in Kushtia
An upazila-level leader of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) was gunned down by unidentified criminals in Mirpur of Kushtia Monday morning.
A villager also sustained bullet wounds during the attack, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
Deceased Ismail Hossain Panjer, 55, was JSD vice-president of Mirpur upazila unit.
He was accused in a dozen of cases including murders, said Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station.
The OC said four criminals sprayed bullets on Panjer when he along with two local people was sitting at a tea stall at Ahmedpur village around 6:00am, killing him dead on the spot.
The bullet-hit villager, Shafi Mandal, is undergoing treatment at Kushtia General Hospital.
Panjer was involved in various crimes and was also a regional leader of outlawed Gono Bahini, the OC said.
He was arrested twice by police between 2009 and 2011.
Panjer was first arrested on February 12, 2009 along with two firearms .Police was arrested him for the second time on September 1, 2011 just after he was released from Kushtia jail on bail in a case.
After the arrest, Panjer gave information to police about his hidden firearms and ammunition.
Later, police along with Panjer conducted a raid at Kalabaria GK (Ganges-Kabodak) canal and recovered one light gun, five bullets and five bombs from under the soil.
Claiming Panjer as a JSD activist, some people led by JSD leaders tried to lay siege Kushtia deputy commissioner's (DC) office demanding his release on September 2 that year.
As they tried to submit memorandum to the DC, police charged batons and dispersed them leaving 20 people injured.
Golam Mohsin, president of JSD Kushtia district unit however, claimed that Panger was a leader of JSD that had no relation with Gono Bahini.
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu visited the house of the slain JSD leader this afternoon.
