Gold, foreign currencies seized at Dhaka airport
Customs Intelligence officials in separate drives seized 13 gold bars weighing 1.5 kilogram and foreign currencies worth Tk 34 lakh at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital today.
Two people were also detained in the drives.
The officials found the gold worth Tk 75 lakh after searching the belongings of a passenger at the customs hall in the airport, said Moinul Khan, director general of Customs Intelligence.
Zakir arrived in the airport around 12:10pm by a flight of Saudi Airlines from Riyadh.
Meanwhile, acting on a tip-off, a team of the intelligence officials picked up Shushangkar Mallik, 27, near the boarding bridge-16 with the foreign currencies when he was going to Malaysia by a Malaysia Airlines flight, said Customs Intelligence Assistant Director Umme Nahida Akter.
The currencies included Saudi Riyal, United Arab Emirates’ Dirham, Malaysian Ringgit and Singaporian Dollar, the customs officials said.
Shushangkar, hailed from Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka, was carrying the currencies hiding in his shoes and in a black trolley bag, she added.
