Road Accidents: ‘1,552 killed, 3,039 hurt in four months’
At least 1,552 people were killed and 3,039 others injured in 1,495 road accidents across the country in the first four months of the year, revealed a report of the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR), a non-government organisation that works for road safety.
There were 195 women and 268 children among the dead. The fatal accidents took place on national and regional highways and inter-district roads, the report added.
The NCPSRR revealed the information through a press release yesterday.
According to the NCPSRR, the report was prepared based on news reports of 22 national dailies, 10 regional newspapers and eight online news portal and agencies between January 1 and April 30 this year.
The report said 411 people lost their lives and 725 others sustained injuries in 383 accidents in January.
In February, some 401 accidents occurred that killed 415 people and injured 884 others.
In March and April 384 and 327 accidents occurred that killed 386 and 340 people and injured 820 and 610 respectively.
Ashis Kumar Dey, general secretary of NCPSRR, said that they identified 10 major reasons behind the accidents.
Racing tendency among drivers, contractual leasing of vehicles to drivers or conductors on daily basis, employing drivers without licence, lack of awareness among pedestrians and light vehicle drivers, overloading and overtaking tendency of drivers, and violation of traffic rules are some of the main reasons behind road accidents, Ashis said.
Besides, long-time driving without interval, unfit vehicles, violation of traffic rules on long routes, raising number of motorbikes and three-wheelers on roads and highways, and carrying passengers and goods in locally-made motorised vehicles are other reasons behind accidents, he added.
