Coordinated efforts to deal with 2nd wave
The possible second wave of coronavirus outbreak will be dealt with through a cooperative effort, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said yesterday.
Other ministries of the government have also started working on the preparation for the second Covid-19 wave and that there was nothing to be fearful of, he added.
He was speaking as the chief guest at an event marking the "National Blood Donation and Posthumous Eye Donation Day 2020" at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka.
"There is a discussion on the second wave of coronavirus in the country. We, however, have taken sufficient preparations… There is no reason to be worried," the minister said.
The government has so far spent Tk 15,000 daily for each regular Covid-19 patient and Tk 47,000 daily for each patient who required ICU treatment. "[In total] the government is spending Tk 1.5 lakh to five lakh for each Covid-19 patient."
About the Covid-19 vaccine, he said, "The directives from the honourable prime minister has been maintained. Effective measures will be taken soon in this regard."
POSITIVITY RATE INCREASE
Meanwhile, 25 people died from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours till 8:00am yesterday, according to a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
With this, the death toll rose to 5,966, which is almost 1.45 percent of all confirmed cases in the country -- 4,10,988.
In the same 24 hours, 1,36 new infections were recorded after 12,891 samples were tested at 113 laboratories, said the press release. The positivity rate stood at 13.47 percent -- significantly higher than the previous days 12.50 percent.
Bangladesh is currently the 20th in the list of worst affected countries in the world in terms of the total number of cases. It is one step behind Indonesia and one step ahead of Ukraine, according to worldometers.info.
Meanwhile, 1,961 Covid-19 patients recovered, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,27,901, which is nearly 80 percent of all confirmed cases.
Among the 25 dead, 20 were males and five females.
Two were aged between 31 and 40 years, two between 41 and 50, six between 51 and 60 and 15 others were above 60 years, added the release.
