The death references of Ramna Batamul carnage case in which eight people were sentenced to death has been sent to the High Court for the scrutiny of the verdict.

The Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court in Dhaka, which delivered the verdict in the case, sent the death references to the HC on Thursday, Supreme Court registrar AKM Shamsul Islam said while talking to reporters at his office this afternoon.

On June 23, the lower court awarded death penalty to eight operatives of Harkatul Jihad (Huji), including its top leader Mufti Abdul Hannan, and life sentence to six for bombing to death 10 people during Pahela Baishakh celebrations at Ramna Batamul in 2001.

Now, the HC authorities will prepare a paper book of the death references for its hearing, the registrar said today.

He said the HC is now hearing and disposing of the death references of 2009 and 2010.

If the HC hears the death references maintaining the serial, the death references of the Ramna Batamul case might be disposed of after around four years, Islam said.

He informed that around 360 death references are now pending with the HC.
