Waste to pollute water of 2 rivers
A garment factory is building a drain to release its waste water into the Dhaleshwari and Gazikhali rivers by grabbing land of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in Nayadingi area of Saturia upazila.
This correspondent found that Tarasima Apparels Limited is building the drain on the southern side of Dhaka-Aricha highway to release the waste water into the Dhaleshwari and Gazikhali rivers.
The drain is being built on government land for one month, but the local administration has not taken any action against the factory.
Manikganj RHD Executive Engineer Md Mahibul Haque said Sub-Assistant Engineer Kamaluddin Ahmed has been asked to take legal action against the factory authorities.
Kamal said the factory authorities did not stop the work despite warnings given several times. A general diary (GD) was filed with Saturia Police Station on May 3 in this regard, Kamal said.
Tarasima Apparels Limited Deputy General Manager Shaon Debnath told local newsmen that they are constructing the drain after taking lease of the land from RHD as the old drain of the factory has become useless due to widening of the Dhaka-Aricha highway.
Saturia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminur Rahman said the authorities of the garment factory have been asked to build the drain according to government rules.
Locals said they use water of the Dhaleswari and Gazikhali rivers for various purposes, but now they are no longer able to do so due to the toxic waste water from the garment factory.
