Two siblings to walk gallows, 17 get life term
A court here yesterday sentenced two siblings to death and 17 others to life imprisonment for killing a man in Biral upazila in 2004.
The death sentence awardees are Zahangir Alam and his brother Shariful Islam, sons of Abdur Rahman of Ratnow village in the upazila while the lifers are Motibar Rahman, Abdur Razzak, Zafrul Haque, Abdur Rahman, Nur Nehar, Suratannessa, Rasel Haque, Mohbub Rahman, Golam Rabbani, Abdus Samad, Nazmul Haque, Aklima Khatun, Mollika Begum, Rostam Ali, Tazun Nehar, Anisur Rahman and Kulsuma Khatun of different villages in Biral and Bochaganj upazilas. Of the convicts, Abdur Rahman and Aklima Khatun were tried in absentia.
Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court-3 of Md Anowarul Haque also fined the two siblings Tk 10,000 and the lifers Tk 5,000 each. In default, the lifers are to suffer another one year in prison. Apart from this, the 17 were jailed for seven years under Section 325.
According to the prosecution, Abdul Bari was killed in a clash between the two rival families of Abdul Kafi and Zahangir Alam over a piece of disputed land in Biral upazila on October 29 in 2004.
Later, a case was filed with Biral Police Station in this connection.
