Thakurgaon celebrates day of freedom

People from all walks of life observed the 'Thakurgaon free day' on Monday in a befitting manner in the town.

On December 3, 1971, Thakurgaon was freed from the Pakistani occupation forces.

District units of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad and Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Gosthi jointly organised different programmes, including placing wreaths on the martyrs' monument and graves, and cultural programmes in the town.

Several freedom fighters and war heroines were accorded reception at the event.

Former mayor of Thakurgaon municipality Mohammad Akbar Hossain inaugurated the function at the martyred freedom fighters' memorial premises in the morning that followed a colourful procession.

They placed wreaths on the monument Aparejeyo 71, built to commemorate the martyrs of the Liberation War.

The speakers at a discussion said after failing to resist the freedom fighters and allied forces, the Pakistani army started leaving the town on December 2 and took shelter at Saidpur Cantonment. The next morning freedom fighters entered the town.
