Section 144 around Rashiklal Jiu temple
The local administration yesterday imposed Section 144 around Rashiklal Jiu temple at Bhatgaon village in Sadar upazila for an indefinite period to avert any untoward incident.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdullah Al Mamun imposed the ban on observing Durga Puja there, apprehending occurrence of unwanted incident as two rival groups -- Sanatan devotees (traditional Hindus) and International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) -- want to observe Durga Puja there.
Locals said the ISKCON followers of the district came to the temple on August 2 in 2009 and started staying there.
Later, they declared a Darmashabha at the temple on September 4 the same year and wanted to establish a branch of ISKCON there.
On September 17 in 2009, the two rival groups locked in a clash, leaving several people of both sides injured.
Fulbabu, 27, brother of Prafulla Chandra, the then president of Rashiklal Jiu Temple committee, succumbed to his injuries at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on September18.
After the incident, the local administration took control of the temple to avert further untoward incident and formed an eight-member ad-hoc committee to look after it.
A legal battle followed the clash and the court ordered both the groups not to enter the temple until resolution of the matter.
The local administration has not given permission to observe Durga Puja at the temple after the incident.
