Robber killed in 'gunfight'
An alleged robber was killed and another sustained bullet wounds when two rival groups locked in a 'gunfight' in Chhagalnaiya upazila of the district early yesterday.
The deceased, Mohiuddin alias Dakat Sabuj, 30, was a resident of Banspara area under Chhagalnaiya municipality.
Police detained bullet-injured Mohammad Palash, 32, of Noakhali's Kabirhat upazila, and Faruque, 27, of Dagonbhuiyan upazila in Feni.
After being informed that two rival groups of robbers were exchanging gunshots at Dakkhin Adharmanik village in the upazila on Wednesday midnight, a police team went to the spot, police said, adding that, sensing the presence of the law enforcers the gang members fled the scene.
Police chased the robbers and managed to catch Faruq. They also rescued bullet-injured Sabuj and Palash from the spot and took them to Feni Sadar Hospital, where the doctors declared Sabuj dead and admitted Palash for treatment.
Officer in Charge (OC) of Chhagalnaiya Police Station MM Morshed said police recovered a gun, five bullets, one machete and three knives from the spot.
Deceased Sabuj was accused in at least eight cases filed with different police stations, including for robbery, mugging and conducting criminal activities, OC Morshed said.
