Pre-polls violence leaves 15 injured in Baufal
At least 15 supporters of an upazila chairman candidate, who is contesting the polls as a dissident of his party Awami League (AL), were injured in an attack allegedly by supports of AL-nominated candidate in Baufal upazila of Patuakhali on Friday.
The attack on him and his supporters took place in the evening in Nayarhat area of Nawmala union in the upazila, said Mojibur Rahman, incumbent chairman of the upazila and also a member of AL in the upazila.
Out of the injured, seven were admitted to Baufal Upazila Health Complex, while others received primary treatment.
Mojibur claimed that he was fortunate to escape unscathed after a gang of 20 to 25 supporters from a procession of AL-nominated candidate Motaleb Hawlader, secretary of AL in the upazila, swooped on them with sharp weapons, sticks and brickbats.
Police soon arrived at the scene upon information and brought the situation under control.
Rebutting, the accusation, Motaleb Hawlader claimed that his supporters did not attack on any opponent. Rather, Mojibur's supporters attacked them after the former brought out a procession.
He further claimed that he was the one who called the police to bring the situation under control.
Khondakar Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Baufal Police Station, said no case was filed in this connection.
