Member of Rohingya robber gang killed in Cox’s Bazar gunfight
A youth, suspected to be a robber, was killed in reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion at Teknaf Sadar upazila in Cox's Bazar earlier today.
The deceased, Md Ishaque (32), was an active member of a gang of robbers of Rohingya origin and led by a ringleader known as Zakir, our Cox's Bazar correspondent reports quoting Abdullah Mohammad Sheikh Shadi, assistant director (media) of Rab-15.
As an active member of the gang, Ishaque had engaged in committing several criminal offences including abduction and drug smuggling in the area, Shadi said.
Tipped off that Ishaque, along with his cohorts, was planning to commit robbery at Khankarpara in the upazila around 2am, a team of the Rab-15 conducted a raid in the area, the Rab official said.
Sensing the presence of the elite force in the area, Ishaque and the gang allegedly started firing at the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back and triggering a gunfight.
At one stage, Ishaque was caught in the line of the fire, Shadi said, adding that two guns and six rounds of bullets were recovered from the spot.
Three Rab members also sustained injuries during the gunfight, the Rab official said.
Rab sent Ishaque's body to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
A case is being lodged with Teknaf Police Station in this connection, said Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of the police station.
