Man to die for killing wife
A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2013.
The convict is Roni Ghosh of Sahapara area in the town. He was tried in absentia.
Khaleda Yasmin, judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Tangail, also fined him Tk one lakh.
The judge also acquitted two other accused of the case--Roni’s father Robi Ghosh and elder sister Purnima Ghosh--as charges brought against them were not proved, said Tanvir Ahmed, court inspector in Tangail.
According to the prosecution, Roni married Monti Ghosh of Nilnagar in Gazipur on June 30 in 2013.
Roni and his family members strangled Monti following an altercation over dowry on September 14 the same year.
Monti’s mother Chini Ghosh then filed a murder case with Tangail Police Station.
After investigation, police later submitted charge sheet against Roni and his father and elder sister.
After examining witnesses and evidence, the judge pronounced the verdict, said Public Prosecutor AKM Nasimul Akter.
