Police on Monday detained the prime accused in the case for killing a teenage girl after rape in Juri upazila of the district on October 25.
The arrestee, Delwar Hosain, 40, a drug addict, is son of late Nosu Mia of Purbo Bashirpur village in the upazila.
During primary interrogation, Delwar confessed his involvement in killing the neighbouring girl after raping her, Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam of Juri Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case, said.
Police quoted Delwar as saying that he lives next to the house of Farjana Jannat Rima, 13, daughter of late Foyzur Rahman of Jangirai village in the upazila.
On October 25, he and his friend Ahmed Babul secretly entered Rima's room around 6:00am, made the girl senseless using sedatives, and gang raped her in her bedroom.
At one stage, when the girl regained consciousness and about to cry for help, they strangled her, fearing that she would disclose their names to her family members, and fled the scene.
Later, Rima's mother Fahima Begum, who saw the duo fleeing the house, filed a murder case with Juri Police Station against Delwar and Babul the same day, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the police station Jahangir Hossain Sarkar said.
Police were conducting drives to arrest the other accused in the case as soon as possible, the OC added.
