Fishing trawler sinks in Karnaphuli
A fishing trawler sank in the Karnaphuli river in Chattogram early today.
All the crew members were rescued by locals soon after the incident happened.
Quoting locals, Bangladesh Coast Guard East Zone Staff Officer (Operation) Habibur Rahman said the trawler, FV Crystal-8, sank in the river upstream of Karnaphuli Bridge in the early hours as water somehow entered it through a leakage, but there was no collision and the weather was calm.
Six or seven crewmen of the trawler managed to swim to shore while others were rescued by local boatmen, said the coast guard official.
On information, a coast guard team rushed to the spot around 6:00am but the trawler had completely gone under water before the team reached there, said Habibur Rahman.
FV Crystal-8 is owned by Hamida Doza Limited, a subsidiary of Crystal Group, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Md Omar Faruk said as the spot is under the territory of Chittagong Port, they demarcated the area with floating buoys.
There was no disruption in movement of vessels to and from the port following the sinking as no ocean-going vessels ply that part of the river, he added.
