Early variety bean boon for Ishwardi growers
Bean farmers in Ishwardi upazila are expecting bumper profit from Rupban, an early variety bean, this year.
Over 340 hectares of land have been brought under early variety bean cultivation in the upazila, with expected earning of Tk 25 crore to Tk 30 crore before winter, said Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO) Md Abdul Latif.
“Early variety bean is being sold at bumper price of Tk 3,500 to Tk 4,000 per maund now. I have already sold beans worth Tk 1 lakh from my seven bighas and expect to earn Tk 2 lakh more by November,” said Abdul Hamid Sheikh, a bean farmer of Patirajpur village.
“Farmers sow early variety of bean in early August and harvest the crop in early October. Bean growers are happy getting good yield of early variety bean as the weather is favourable,” the UAO said.
Many farmers prefer to cultivate early variety of bean to earn bumper profit before winter as prices drop when seasonal beans come to the market,” he said, adding that the Rupban variety is found everywhere in the upazila.
Over Tk 100 crore worth of seasonal beans alone are produced in the upazila, the country's biggest bean producing area, every year, he said.
Although the early variety bean brings bumper profit, farmers need to spray a lot of pesticides in the fields to prevent pest attack, the UAO added.
When this correspondent visited bean fields in Muladuli and other areas of Ishwardi and Atghoria upazilas, he found that the farmers were happy due to the plentiful flowering in the bean fields.
