‘Drug peddler’ killed in Bandarban ‘gunfight’ with BGB
A suspected drug peddler was killed in what was claimed to be a gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Naikhyangchhari upazila of Bandarban early today.
BGB also claimed to have recovered 80,000 pieces of yaba and a locally-made firearm from the spot, reports our Bandarban correspondent quoting BGB officials.
"The deceased, aged around 25, had access to Kutupalong Rohingya camp, and is suspected to belong to the Rohingya community. However, his identity could not be confirmed immediately," said Lieutenant Colonel Ali Haider Azad Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB-34 battalion.
The gunfight took place in Baishfari Godharbil area in the upazila around 5:00am, said the commanding officer.
A team of the battalion was patrolling in the area when they noticed five unidentified men roaming around. Asked to identify themselves, the men opened fire on the BGB team, who retaliated, the official said.
At one stage, one of them sustained bullet injuries while the others managed to flee. The injured was rushed to Ukhiya upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead, Lt Col Ali Haider also said.
The body of the deceased has been sent to the hospital's morgue for autopsy, he added.
