BU students on hunger strike demanding VC’s resignation
Students of Barishal University today started a hunger strike demanding the resignation of their Vice Chancellor Dr SM Imamul Haque.
The students began the hunger strike in front of the university’s administrative building at 10:00am, reports our Barishal correspondent from the spot.
Four students started the strike and the number of participants would increase, said Lokman Hossain, one of the protesting students.
“Some teachers and employees already extended their support to our demands,” he added.
The hunger strike would be continued until death if the demands are not met, one of the students told our Barishal correspondent.
“As the BU VC ignored our eight-point demand, we also extended our support to the movement of the students demanding removal of the VC,” Abu Jafor, secretary of BU Teachers’ Association (BUTA), told the journalists today.
Meanwhile, Belayet Hossain Talukder, joint secretary (University) of the Ministry of Education, today said that the BU VC already submitted application for leave till end of his tenure and it would be forwarded to the concern authority.
Since March 26, students have been protesting demanding the resignation of the VC and a section of teachers have also pledged their allegiance to the cause.
On March 28, authorities shut down the university for an indefinite period amid student protests demanding withdrawal of the VC for his 'offensive' comment made while addressing a programme marking the 49th Independence Day on the campus.
The following day, Prof Imamul Huq expressed sorrow for his comment, saying it was misunderstood by the students.
On March 26, students started demonstrations claiming that the VC arranged the Independence Day programme on the campus without inviting students. During the programme, the VC reportedly labelled them as sons of Razakars.
This remark irked the students and they started their protest programmes demanding removal of VC.
