Snatching of Betel Leaf

BCL man caught

Police arrested a Kulaura upazila unit leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on charge of snatching betel leaf from a van on Tuesday.

The upazila BCL suspended the arrestee, Talukder Jasim Siddiquee, organising secretary of Bhatara union BCL, and issued a show cause notice to Kamrul Islam, general secretary of the unit, for their alleged involvement in snatching the betel leaf, party sources said.

A Sylhet-bound pickup van carrying the item reached a newly constructed culvert in Bhatara union, when Kamrul and Jasim tried to stop the vehicle and took cages of betel leaf from it on Tuesday, said locals.

Afterwards, the van driver chased them and caught Jasim.

Informed, police arrested Jasim and took him to Kulaura Police Station.

Later, betel leaf trader Abdul Khalek filed a case with the police station on Thursday.

“We suspended Jasim Siddiquee from BCL and issued a show cause notice to Kamrul. The action has been taken for violation of the organisation's code of conduct,” Kulaura upazila BCL General Secretary Abu Saiham Rumel told this correspondent yesterday.
