The six-hour hartal enforced by Bandarban district Awami League protesting the murder of its leader ended peacefully.

The district AL called the shutdown from 6:00am today after the body of Chaw Thowai Mong Marma,53, former vice president of AL’s Bandarban town unit, was found in a hilly remote area of Kuhalong union in Sadar upazila yesterday.

For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel.

Due to the shutdown, all business establishments remained closed for six hours and public transports were not plying in the seven upazilas of the district.

No long-route buses entered or left the district town, reports our Bandarban correspondent.

Leaders and activists of the local AL brought out procession at the key points of the district town in support of hartal.

However, no untoward incident took place in the district during the shutdown.

The AL leader, Chaw Thowai Mong Marma, was allegedly abducted from his farmhouse on Wednesday night. He was also a former commissioner of Ward 5 in Bandarban town.

On May 19, brother of an AL leader was shot dead at Rajbilla in Bandarban Sadar upazila.
