734 Oikyafront activists sued in four days
Four cases were filed against 734 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami and Krishak Sramik Janata League (KSJL) -- 404 by name and 330 as unidentified -- in the district in the last four days.
Of them, 458 were made accused in two cases in Tangail-8 (Sakhipur-Basail) constituency and 276 in two cases in Tangail-2 (Bhuapur-Gopalpur) constituency.
Sakhipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Amir Hossain said a police van was vandalised and a crude bomb was exploded at Borochowna in Sakhipur on Wednesday, leaving four cops injured.
Sub-Inspector Mohammad Obaidullah filed a case with the PS in this regard on the same day against 194 local KSJL, BNP and Jamaat men by name and unidentified 150 others, he said.
Six of the accused of the case were arrested on the same day while police were launching drives to arrest others, the OC said.
Earlier on Sunday, three local leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were injured in a criminal attack in Kachua area, he said.
Sajib Ahmed, convenor of upazila unit of BCL, filed a case with the PS in this regard on the same night against 54 KSJL, BNP and Jamaat men by name and unidentified 60 others, he added.
Police arrested Atoar Rahman, president of upazila unit of KSJL, in the case a day after the incident and sent him to jail through a Tangail court, the OC said.
Rafiqul Islam, president of Tangail district unit of KSJL, however, termed both the cases 'false' and also alleged that the cases were filed with the intention of keeping Oikyafront men in the constituency away from electioneering.
An election camp of AL candidate at Matikata in Bhuapur upazila was vandalised and a crude bomb exploded there on Monday, said Bhuapur Police Station OC Rashidul Islam.
Joaherul Islam, general secretary of Nikrail union unit of AL, filed a case with the PS in this regard on the same day against 64 local BNP-Jamaat men by name and unidentified 60 others, OC Rashidul said.
Another election camp of the same candidate at Meghar Potol in the same upazila was vandalised and torched and a crude bomb was exploded there on Tuesday, he said.
Alam Sheikh, general secretary of ward No 2 unit of Gabsara union AL, filed a case with the PS in this regard on the same night against 92 local BNP-Jamaat men by name and unidentified 60 others, he said.
Golam Mostofa, president of Bhuapur upazila unit of BNP, however, said the 'false' cases were filed against a large number of local BNP leaders and workers to clear the way to steal votes.
