7 hurt in clash as locals bar 19 people from Narayanganj entry into Pirojpur
Seven people, including a union parishad chairman, were injured today in a clash that ensued after locals barred 19 people from Narayanganj from entering Pirojpur district this afternoon.
The incident took place in front of Baldiya Union Parishad office in Nesarabad upazila of the district, reports our local correspondent quoting police.
"The 19 people, all residents of Nesarabad, Bhandaria and Kaukhali upazila in the district, came from Narayanganj in a big trawler. Local administration decided to place them on 14-day quarantine at Katapitaniya Govt Primary School -- a designated cyclone shelter -- but local people objected to this and launched an attack on the officials concerned, including police," said Hayatul Islam Khan, superintendent of Pirojpur police.
Seven people, including Baldiya Union Parishad Chairman Md Shaheen Ahmmed, Asian TV's local journalist Mostafa, and two policemen were injured in the clash. Among them the journalist sustained critical injuries, the SP said.
The law enforcers later brought the situation under control and the 19 people were placed under quarantine at another building in the upazila, the police official also said.
Legal steps will be taken against the culprits in this connection, he added.
