50 injured in Sunamganj clash
At least 50 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Kurshi village in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district yesterday morning.
Of the injured, 14 were admitted to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital and 10 were rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The rest were given first aid.
Police and locals said there was a longstanding conflict between Shamim Ahmed and Monir Uddin of the same area over establishing supremacy at the village in the upazila.
Around 11:00am yesterday, Shamim and Monir engaged in an altercation over the issue. At the time, Shamim hurled abusive at Monir.
As the news of this altercation spread, the men of Shamim and Monir rushed to the spot and attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving at least 50 people from both sides injured, said Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Chhatak Police Station.
Around 200 villagers took part in the clash, said local people.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to bring the situation under control, said the OC.
Of the injured, 24 were admitted to hospitals while the rest given first aid, he said.
Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to avert any further trouble, said the police official.
