Students demand Jucsu polls
Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday brought out a procession at campus demanding immediate election of JU central students’ union (Jucsu). During the march, they sang patriotic songs with instruments.
Around 50 students under the banner “Jahangirnagar Sangskritik Jote” brought out the procession from Teachers-Students Centre at around 11:30 am.
They also submitted a memorandum to JU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam in this regard.
Ashikur Rahman, president of the front, said, “Jucsu is where all communities can express their views. We have been deprived of Jucsu for the last 26 years.”
Among others, the front’s General Secretary Shahidul Islam Pappu, Chhatra Union campus unit president Nazir Amin Joy, and Chhatra Front (Marxist) general secretary Mahathir Mohammad were present.
The last Jucsu and hall union polls took place in 1992-93.
The movement comes in the midst of Dhaka University gearing up to hold its central students’ union (Ducsu) polls in March.
JU VC Prof Farzana Islam made a commitment to hold Jucsu polls after last year’s registered graduate election, which was held after 19 years. However, the university authorities have not taken any initiative to organise Jucsu polls.
