Bangladesh awarded for success in hygiene
Bangladesh has been awarded the “India Today Safaigiri Awards” for achieving remarkable success in public sanitation, hygiene and cleanliness.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali received the award from Indian Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu at a programme in New Delhi yesterday.
Aroon Purie, chairman and editor-in-chief of India Today group, presided over the function, according to a press statement of Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.
According to a World Bank report, open defecation in Bangladesh has reduced from 34 percent in 1990 to just one percent of the national population in 2015.
The third edition of India Today Safaigiri Awards felicitated 16 cleanliness champions. Fifteen other individuals and organisations were also given the award for contribution to cleanliness.
