ACC fines four passport 'brokers'
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) during a countrywide enforcement drive yesterday caught four brokers red-handed atdifferent regional passportsoffices, said an official press release.
Theywerecaught from Meherpur, Munshiganj, Cumilla and Dinajpur.They were handed over to mobile court of respective district administrations, and later fined and imprisoned.
ACC conducted the drive simultaneouslyat seven district passport offices including those of Barishal, Tangail and Sylhet,acting on a complaint that brokers in collusion with employees and officers control passport service in exchange of bribe.
ACC team found out that an additional Tk1,500 and4,000 is taken respectively for issuing each ordinary and urgent passport atMunshiganjpassport office.
Theydiscovered that assistant director of that office Halima Khatun has not checked the office attendance registrar for a month.
They detected that additional Tk500 to 2,500 taken for the service at Tangail office.
Syndication of brokers and officialswas detected at Sylhetpassport office aswell.
ACC director general Mohammad Munir Chowdhury, who is also the chief coordinator of ACC's ongoing enforcement drives, said thatthe drive aimed at containing corruption and public harassment at passports offices.They will file corruption cases against the accused.
