1st day of 'lockdown': Major roads in Ctg mostly vacant but alleys crowded
On the first day of the week-long lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19, main roads and thoroughfares in the port city were largely free of vehicles but crowds were noticeable in the alleyways of Atura Depot, Hemsen Lane, Rumghata, Shasher Para, Bahaddarhat, and Chandgaon.
Almost all the shops including kitchen markets and grocery shops were open in these streets. Whenever a police vehicle entered a street, the shops were seen closing shutters hurriedly, reports our Chattogram correspondent.
There were overflowing crowds of people in these alleys. And people were seen buying iftar items and daily necessities.
"There is no problem here. Those on the main road are facing problems," Rafique, a meat seller at the Atura Depot told The Daily Star.
"By the grace of God, nothing will happen to us. However, sometimes when a police car enters, we close the shop," he said.
"My shop has been open since morning. No one disturbed. However, I am afraid of the police," said Selim Uddin, a fish seller at the Rumghata Bazar of the city.
The main streets of Chattogram city were heavily guarded by the police, but the alleys were full of people carrying on with their regular chores.
Those who went out with cars without a movement pass were being fined by police at important intersections in the city.
