Woman arrested for murdering husband
Amina Aktar Liza, 30, second wife of deed writer Rejaul Karim Riaj, 40, confessed her role in Riaj's murder. Riaj was hacked to death in his bedroom by a man with whom Liza had an extramarital affair, Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) informed journalists at a press conference on Sunday.
The body of Riaj, son of Abdus Sattar Howlader of Rajnagar village under Charmonai union of Barishal Sadar Upazila, was recovered by police on Friday morning.
There were several wounds made by a sharp weapon on different parts of his body.
Riaj's brother Monirul Islam Ripon lodged a case in this connection with Kotwali Police Station on Saturday.
Police detained Liza, who was in the same house with the victim during the killing, along with her brother and the victim's brother, for interrogation, said Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of the station.
All except Liza were released after she confessed. She confessed that she had divorced two people in the past after taking ownership of their property, and she married Riaj in the hope of gaining more wealth, Moazzem Hossain Bhuiyan, BMP deputy commissioner (south), said.
“She put pressure on Riaj to transfer his property to her, but he denied. She conspired with her lover Masum and his associate Hailla. Masum and Hailla hid inside their home on Thursday while Liza gave Riaj food laced with sedatives. She slept in a different room, and the men entered Riaj's bedroom when he was in deep sleep,” said the DC.
“They hacked Riaj to death with Liza's help and fled the scene after digging a hole on the floor. They had planned to make the incident look like a burglary attempt.”
In the morning, Liza told neighbours that her husband was murdered by burglars, he added. Liza was sent to jail on Sunday after her confessional statement was recorded at the court under Section 164.
Police are currently looking to arrest the other killers, said Sub-inspector Bashir Ahmed.
