Truck catches fire on Jamuna bridge
A moving truck caught fire on Bangabandhu Bridge over the river Jamuna, causing suspension of traffic for an hour yesterday.
The incident occurred around 11:36am when a tyre of the rod-laden truck from Dhaka exploded near pillar no 37, according to traffic control room of the multi-purpose bridge.
The fire might have broken out after the rim of the wheel rubbed against the surface of the road, said Abdur Razzak, senior station manager of Tangail fire station.
The driver and his helper escaped unhurt as they managed to get off the vehicle immediately.
On information, two fire fighting units from Tangail and Sirajganj rushed to the spot and doused the blaze, said Abdur Razzak.
The incident left the authorities to suspend vehicular movement on the both lanes of the bridge for safety reasons.
The traffic resumed around 12:30pm after the damaged truck had been removed from the spot, said an officer of the control room.
