Take action against newspapers that lied for press declaration
Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman yesterday in the parliament demanded that the information ministry take action against some daily and weekly newspapers published from Narayanganj that provided “false information” for getting their press declaration.
The lawmaker from Narayanganj-4 (Sadar) made the demand while raising a supplementary question.
In reply, state minister for information Murad Hassan told the parliament he will talk to the deputy commissioner of Narayanganj as soon as possible to collect information regarding declaration of daily and weekly newspapers of the district.
“If it is proven that those newspapers provided false information [while getting declaration] and the deputy commissioner sends us such report, we will dispose of the lawmaker’s proposal,” Murad Hassan, said.
Earlier, Osman said the information ministry informed the parliament that 19 dailies are being published from Narayanganj. “But most of those newspapers don’t have any press declaration,” he claimed.
Citing example of daily “Juger Chinta”, he said it mentioned Cumilla as its address, but is published from Narayanganj.
“Journalists of some of those newspapers -- who were arrested during a bomb attack -- acknowledged that those newspapers are funded by Jamaat-e-Islami,” he said.
The AL MP also said some journalists of those newspapers were also arrested during robbery.
“Those 19 daily newspapers didn’t get their declaration following due process. If my statement is true, what action will you take [against them]?” he questioned.
