Shuttle, bus service halted at CU after BCL factions clash
Classes and examinations were suspended at Chittagong University (CU) yesterday, after Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists allegedly halted shuttle train and teachers’ bus service following a factional clash in the early hours.
A clash broke out between two factions of BCL -- Bijoy Group and Choose Friends with Care (CFC) group -- at around 12:30am, following an altercation between the two groups on campus, which left five people injured.
The aggrieved BCL men also picked up the loco master of the shuttle train, Khurshid Alam, in the morning. He was released around 11am, said Sholoshohor Station master Tonmoy Chowdhury.
Following the incident, a group of BCL men allegedly cut off the hose pipe of the shuttle train. The proctor said they also punctured the tyres of teachers’ bus, barring any student or teacher from coming to the campus, resulting in suspension of all classes examination.
Meanwhile, the two groups locked in another clash around 2:30pm where a BCL activist named Ashabur Rahman Kanak was injured, said police.
With head injuries, he was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said a doctor of CU medical centre.
Md Tarikul Islam, a leader of Bijoy group who was the joint general secretary of former BCL committee, told The Daily Star that aggrieved BCL men who were injured during the clash blocked the shuttle train and bus service.
Claiming that CU BCL President Rejaul Haque Rubel is not a student anymore, he sought suspension of Rubel from Awami League’s student wing.
Bijoy group also announced they will demonstrate on campus until Rubel resigns from his post.
Contacted, Rubel said the activists of Bijoy group carried out an attack on their men without any provocation.
Acting Proctor Pranab Mitra Chowdhury said the situation is now under control.
“Additional police force has been deployed to avert any untoward incident,” he said, adding that they have been trying to resolve the matter.
