Rajshahi mayor hears from citizens on Facebook
A modern city free from drugs, dirt, and traffic jams and full with modern facilities and ample scope for employment are what people of Rajshahi want from their mayor.
The opinions came in the form of comments on Facebook, after Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzman Liton posted “What type of Rajshahi you want, friends?” on Thursday afternoon.
By yesterday, the post gathered around a thousand likes and 250 suggestions.
Most suggestions dealt with the city's problems of sprouting drug zones, traffic jams as a result of increase in illegal vehicles, uncontrolled mosquito menace and lack of employment opportunities.
Many suggested setting up industries, while some others opined for planting trees. Demands for multiplex cinema theatres and playgrounds also appeared in the comments.
One Muahed Hasan said he wanted to see the city as beautiful as Singapore. Sirajee Shafiqul Islam wanted Rajshahi be declared the oldest city, and turning it as modern as Indian cities of Gurgaon or Noida.
Motiur Rahman wrote “Please, raise your voice against drugs,” while Tusher said he can provide a list of the drug peddlers and spots.
Joydeep Bhaduri suggested corrections of engineering faults of streets and better traffic management.
“First of all, I want a jam-free Rajshahi,” wrote Probhat Mridha.
Citing that all the city's footpaths, which were built spending crores of public money, were being occupied by street vendors, Sarder Jwel appealed for freeing the footpaths.
Luxmi Sumi wrote she expects a modern waste management system where dirt from dumpsters does not pollute the streets.
Tawhid Muhammad Rumel said, “I am feeling the curse of non-employment. Why should we turn to the capital for a job?”
Uday Khan suggested building international relations with India, China and Japan, setting up an international airport and utilising the Padma river chars for farming.
Jahangir Alam wrote the mayor would be remembered for a thousand years, if he is able to stop the physicians getting commission from diagnostic centres.
The mayor's post gathered attention of people outside the city too.
Shafiul Alam Sagar wrote the bright lights of the city fascinate him. But dwellers of his Bujkai village near the city live in the dark without any modern facilities. He wanted the mayor to take steps for extending the city's territory so that it covers his village.
