‘Prepared to spend Eid at Raju Sculpture if needed’
A faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday resumed demonstrations, alleging that the controversial new central committee is being validated. On May 19, they halted demonstrations after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directly ordered ousting of controversial individuals from the committee.
They started a sit-in at 1:30am yesterday, at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University, after BCL’s central unit issued a notice saying the new committee would pay respects at the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dhanmondi today.
“By placing wreath at the base of Bangabandhu’s mural, the new controversial committee will get validated,” BM Lipi Akhter, president of Ruqayyah Hall Chhatra League, told The Daily Star.
Rakib Hassan, former planning affairs secretary of the student front, told The Daily Star that the decision of the central committee is against the decision of Awami League and its President Sheikh Hasina.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had ordered to exclude those who are controversial from the new committee. They are violating the order,” he claimed.
The faction organised a press conference at the venue yesterday noon and firmly vowed to continue demonstrations until “the problem” is solved, even if it means “spending Eid at Raju Sculpture”.
Contacted, BCL general secretary Golam Rabbani said they were investigating about the “controversial members” and would vacate the posts if allegations against them are found to be true.
On May 11, Chhatra League announced its full central committee, that sparked instant protests among activists and leaders within. Protesting factions said deserving candidates were ignored and controversial candidates were picked for the posts.
