One held in Sylhet
Police arrested one person yesterday in Bishwanathpur upazila of Sylhet, a day after a case was filed in connection with the rape of a woman, who later died by suicide.
The twenty-one year old woman, from Laltek village of Bishwanath upazila, died by suicide on October 10, a day after returning from her brother-in-law’s house. Police recovered the body, and she was later buried after autopsy.
Her mother found a note in her bag on Sunday, where she said she was abducted and gang-raped during her visit.
The mother took the note to Bishwanathpur Police Station, and on Monday, her father filed a case accusing four persons including her brother-in-law Foyzul Islam.
Police arrested Foyzul while others are on the run, said Shamim Musa, officer-in-charge of the police station. “After receiving the note and filing of the case, we cross-checked her claims and carried out a drive to arrest the accused, whose names were on the note written by the victim”, he said.
According to the case statement, the victim went to his sister’s in-law’s house on October 6. On the night of October 9, some miscreants abducted and gang-raped her.
The abductors returned her to her brother-in-law’s house and that day, her brother-in-law returned her to her house.
The next day, the girl hung herself from the roof.
