New policy urgent for public libraries
Department of Public Libraries and British Council’s Libraries Unlimited Programme held “National Policy Workshop on the Development of Public Libraries” at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in Dhaka yesterday.
State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid was present as chief guest. AJM Abdullahel Baki, director, Department of Public Libraries; Andrew Newton, deputy director, British Council; and Kirsty Crawford, programme director of Libraries Unlimited, were present as guests of honour.

KM Khalid said formulation of a strong, comprehensive public library policy is a must to ensure modern, demand-based and effective library services.
Abdullahel Baki said formulation of a new policy for public libraries will help the sector perform its roles.
Andrew Newton said British Council is supporting the government to develop a national library policy.
Kristy Crawford said, “The British Council’s Libraries Unlimited Programme has been advocating for a new policy for the sector since 2017, and we wish to continue this work to support a draft national policy.”
