National poet’s death anniversary observed
The 43rd death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was observed yesterday.
Nazrul was revered as “Bidrohi Kobi” for his strong voice against social injustice. He passed away in Dhaka in 1976 at the age of 77. He was buried with full state honours beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque.
Nazrul produced a large body of poetry and music with varying themes that included religious devotion and rebellion against all sorts of oppression.
Different socio-cultural and political organisations observed the day with various programmes. The programmes of the day began with Qurankhwani after Fazr prayers at the Dhaka University (DU) Central Mosque adjacent to the grave of the National Poet. Later, teachers, students, officers and employees of the university assembled at the foot of ‘Aparajeyo Bangla’ sculpture from where a procession led by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman proceeded towards the grave of the poet at 7:15 am, says BSS.
AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader placed a wreath at the poet’s grave around 8:30am, according to UNB. He was accompanied by other party activists.
Bangla Academy organised a solo speech at 4pm marking the day with Professor Dr Anisuzzaman in the chair.
Nazrul’s powerful poems inspired people to fight against injustice and opression during the colonial rule while his songs and poems were also a great source of inspiration for the freedom fighters during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on May 24, 1899 at Churulia village in Asansol subdivision under Burdwan district of West Bengal, India.
