Man sentenced to death for killing wife
A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife over dowry of Tk 25 lakh in 2015.
Sonia Sultana was strangled to death at her residence at the capital's Uttara Paschim area on July 26, 2015. Later the victim's husband secretly buried her and informed her family members that she fell sick.
Judge Md Sharif Uddin of the Ninth Special Tribunal for Prevention of Women & Children Repression of Dhaka handed down the sentence in presence of the convict Moshiur Rahman alias Sukhon.
After the verdict, the judge sent Sukhon to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
Earlier, the prosecution and defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 14 prosecution witnesses including Nihal, son of the victim.
The victim's family had filed an application with the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka for exhuming the body of Sonia to conduct further inquest and post-mortem.
The body was exhumed on August 24, 2015 and a new inquest report was filed along with a post-mortem. Doctors found that the victim was strangled to death.
Detective Branch on December 20 the same year pressed charges against five including Sukhon, but the High Court stayed all proceedings of the case against four other accused.
