Khulna footpaths abuzz with Eid shoppers
Customers are thronging shops on footpaths in Khulna city ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr expected to be celebrated tomorrow.
Low and middle income groups were the majority seen shopping at the makeshift shops.
Visiting different areas, this correspondent found them purchasing various items -- including clothes, shoes, prayer caps, perfumes and jaynamaz. The road from Baro Bazar to Dakbangla were completely blocked by street hawkers and shoppers.
Some were selling lungi and other clothes at Picture Palace intersection and Hadis Park area.
Besides, major portions of footpaths by KD Ghosh Road, Clay Road, Lower Jashore Road, a portion of Sir Iqbal Road, Cemetery Road, West Mekot Road, Chitrali Bazar road in Khalishpur, Phulbari Gate Crossing and Gallamari intersection were occupied.
“We are selling cosmetics and perfume round the clock at reasonable prices,” said Amir Sohel who runs his shop beside Cemetery Road. “Low-income people are our main customers,” he said.
There was no space for pedestrians’ movement in Nixon Market area due to crowd, as customers remained busy choosing and bargaining for their preferred items.
At for last-moment shopping, more customers have chosen the makeshift shops to buy clothes, footwear and other items at cheaper price.
“I have already bought for my family members; now I am trying to buy gifts for my relatives,” said Reshma Falguni, a woman from Tutpara area. “The prices are a little bit higher than last year,” she commented.
Several hawkers expressed their satisfaction over sales.
Punjabi is available at Tk 250-500, shirt Tk 100-400, and shoes and sandals Tk 100-400 at Dakbangla and Nixon Market footpaths, said Ismail Sheikh, a worker of Crescent Jute Mill, who took his son and daughter for Eid shopping.
Last week, over 30,000 jute mill workers in Khulna got their due wages from the government. They started flocking to footpath shops at the eleventh hour.
Around 1pm, customers were seen choosing punjabis, T-shirts, pants, saris, salwar kamiz, shoes, perfume and sunglasses beside Lower Jashore road amid scorching heat.
