Improving Traffic: CMP launches bicycle patrol
Traffic department of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) yesterday launched a bicycle patrol team, consisting 10 traffic police with an aim to ease traffic congestion in the city.
Harunur Rashid Hazaree, deputy commissioner of CMP traffic (North), inaugurated launching of the team in the morning at Tigerpass intersection.
“The number of traffic police is insufficient compared to what is needed. It's always difficult for one or two traffic police to control gridlock at a specific point,” he said.
The DC said bicycles would help enhance mobility and range of foot patrols. Also, the team can move from one spot to another depending on traffic situation and help other traffic police in that area.
About the initiative, he said, “As traffic constables are not entitled to get motorcycles from the department, they used to face difficulties in moving from one place to another quickly. So, we've decided to equip them with bicycles.”
“Moreover, bicycles are environment friendly,” added the DC. If this proves to be effective in better controlling the traffic situation, CMP would take more such initiatives in future, he said.
